Link: Sophie Calle

Sophie Calle is a French artist who I would say is quite peculiar, a quality that is definitely reflected in her art.

In the article written for Vice, they focus on Sophie's work of people seeing the sea for the first time but before getting deep into that, I would like to comment on other works that are mentioned before. The first one is when she talks about following a man to different countries. I found this extremely intrusive and creepy but at the same time, it provokes curiosity in me. Not so much for her work as for her as a person. For how she thinks, how her mind works.

So, the work this article focuses on is that she took a group of people who lived considerably close to the sea but that never had seen it to the mentioned sea for the first time, in order to capture their reactions. These people had to face the sea for as long as they wanted, and then look directly at the camera, which provided a varied outcome.

I did like this last work over the others she had done because with her art in this case, she was provoking really intense emotions to some people. I can only imagine what it must feel like watching the sea in the flesh for the first time. It must be so overwhelming, and that's exactly what Sophie portrayed with her work this time. I really like this idea that art can be powerful and even change people's lives.
